One of the most eagerly anticipated new destinations for anyone interested in the latest developments in 2D and 3D post production will be the NAB show Post Pit on the show floor.

Produced in partnership with FCPUG Network SuperMeet, fxguide.com Digital Production Buzz and Future Media Concepts, the Post Pit Pavilion will  be a central gathering point for those interested in the cutting edge of digital content creation.

“With the exploding interest in new technologies such as HDSLR acquisition and file-based 3D workflows, we are going to have some top industry gurus reveal their experiences with the latest production tools and share the tips they have developed while using it in a series of half-hour sessions throughout the week,” said organizer Daniel Berube, Boston Final Cut Pro User Group. “In addition, we will also have many prominent equipment manufacturers showing off their latest gear, which will make the Post Pit Pavilion a highly valuable experience for those attending the NAB Show.”

Michael Horton of the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group also helped organize the program.

“We’re targeting serious production pros,” said Co-Founder Mike Seymour of fxguide.com, another organizer whose Post Pit program addresses high-end digital capture to final feature film post production. “We’ve lined up directors and visual effects supervisors to share real world production techniques using the latest gear.”

Among the exhibitors presenting will be Canon, showing off their file-based recoding codecs and workflows, JVC demonstrating instant editing in Apple’s Final Cut Pro with the JVC ProHD tapeless camcorders, and Avid who will feature their Avid Media Access technology in action.

AJA Video’s Gary Adcock will give a real-time, practical demonstration, Monday, 2 p.m., of an efficient workflow from lens to post using AJA’s 10 bit Ki Pro digital video recorder to instantly create Apple ProRes files during acquisition. Then Adcock will show how Ki Pro’s up/downs/cross conversion can bring unity to a production while enabling the most efficient direct-to-edit capabilities in the industry. Finally, he will employ a portable to Express as a digital I/O system with full 10-bit support to monitor and edit those files anywhere, at anytime.

Prominent among the industry experts at the Post Pit will be DP, director and HDSLR filmmaker Philip Bloom with a presentation on “Shooting with Canon EOS HDSLR Cameras;” Scott Simmons, who will talk about “Canon EOS 5D Mark II Multicam Workflow;” and director, 3D cinematographer and editor Tim Dashwood, president of Dashwood Cinema Solutions, who will present “A Beginner’s Guide to Stereoscopic 3D.”

Dashwood’s session on Monday at 2:30 will start right from the definition of stereoscopic 3D and move through the entire post-production workflow using Final Cut Pro.

“People coming to Post Pit will learn how to construct inexpensive 3D camera set-ups including your own beam splitters and simple side-by-side rigs.” Dashwood said. “But primarily we will discuss the dos and don’ts of stereoscopic 3D and how to achieve the best 3D results possible.”

Dashwood is the author of the popular Stereo3D Toolblox plug-in that works in all hosts currently supported by FxFactory. Final Cut Pro 6 and 7, Motion 3 and 4, Final Cut Express 4, and Adobe After Effects CS3 and CS4.

“I’ll be demonstrating the capabilities of Stereo3D Toolbox and releasing its new version 2 and the tools that go along with it,” Dashwood said. “One of its great strengths I’ll be presenting is the ability of Stereo3D Toolbox to adjust stereoscopic convergence based on keyframes.”

Sessions continue on Tuesday and Wednesday with opportunities to hear more from Pixar Studios, Blackmagic Design, RED Camera and others.

The Post Pit will also feature the NAB Show BuZZ, the official production podcast of the 2010 NAB Show produced by Digital Production BuZZ. Watch the program come together in the live on-floor podcast studio featuring interviews with Post Pit speakers along with other industry movers and shakers.
